One of my brothers once commented that he thought I didn't really work. I found that comment interesting it seemed to me as a freelance photographer all I did was work.
I am glad we had very different lives - I never envied him his.
Enjoying this installment. Never heard of The Island at the Center of the World, but I just looked it up and it sounds intriguing. Reading this reminded me of the fact that you gave me Dune and Stranger in a Strange Land to read (thanks for that!). Also, you sent me books by Hillerman and Sherman Alexie which I ignored at the time, but am now wild about. Love that final quote about artists--we're always evolving.
I'm thrilled that you are reading my Substack postings. I had forgotten to include Hillerman and Alexie on my list. Thanks for reminding me. Hillerman's daughter has taken up the mantel of the writing her father began. I'm enjoying her stories as well. Movie influences are coming this week and I'm working on the Warwhoop years soon -- probably in a chapter about newspapers.
Stan Lee?! European philosopher? Grouped with Plato and Hesse? I think Stan Lee did great things for comics, but I'm not sure he could be categorized as a philosopher.
You and I both read a lot. We both have read many of the same books and authors, and we have found something in reading that compels us to read more. For me reading helps me cope, helps me understand, and provides a perspective on the my choices I've made in life.
Thanks for doing this Michael, I'm enjoying reading your posts. What do we call these- "posts" doesn't do it justice. Essays?
Glad you got the Stan Lee joke. Hopefully all these posts may someday be collected into a book. I love your discourse about how reading helps. BTW: I'm always looking for a good book suggestion.
If you are interested in the roots of modern anthropology, "Gods of the Upper Air" is a good one. From that book I learned about Zora Neale Hurston, who wrote "Their Eyes were Watching God". Lately I've been consumed with travel books on Italy so I haven't been reading much for pleasure.
Another nice read (about reading)!
